This internship program is a very valuable opportunity for junior medical students to gain practical medical knowledge and guide them along their medical journey.

When I first heard of this opportunity from an email, it immediately caught my attention as it was one of the very few programs that allowed me to attach to a hospital as a Year 1 medical student. I also searched up the hospital I was going to work at and was astonished by its modern and unique design. The application procedures were also very simple, and I was booking my flight to Nanjing in no time.

When I first arrived at the city, I was very surprised by how advanced the technologies were with automated delivery robots and self-service convenience stores. Almost everything were paid through e-wallets and cash were rarely used if not never seen around town. The people here were also incredibly nice with excellent service and polite attitudes.

Having spent a total of 6 weeks here in Nanjing, I attached to 5 specialties at the hospital - General Surgery, Oncology, Critical Care Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Cardiovascular Surgery. The first couple weeks were rather relaxing, perhaps because the organizer wanted me to get familiar with the hospital before letting me into operation theatres. However, towards the end of the internship, I was given the opportunity to observe various surgeries from C-sections to cardiac bypass surgeries. It was a very eye-opening experience for me as an aspiring doctor who entered the operation theatre for the first time ever. I still remember the first time I saw the obstetricians cut open the uterus and took the baby out. I was so excited yet nervous at that moment.

Apart from internship opportunities, this program also sponsored many sightseeing activities for participants. We visited Shanghai and Suzhou at the first weekend, before touring around Nanjing and visiting the many tourist spots in this city filled with cultural and historical values.

All in all, I am very happy that I signed up for this program and I strongly encourage other students to apply in the future as well.
